Resetting your Forza Horizon 4 progress on a Steam Deck
After two frustrating hours including an unnecessarily optimistic reinstallation of a 90GB game, I finally figured out how to wipe your Forza Horizon 4 progress on the Steam Deck.
Here's my super simple guide:
Click on Forza Horizon 4. Go to the little cog on the right, click on 'Properties...', the on the 'General' screen that appears make sure that the 'Keep game's saves in the Steam Cloud for Forza Horizon 4' slide is set to off.
Disconnect from the internet. Click the wifi symbol at the top of the screen and turn wifi off.
Press the 'Steam' button on your console. Choose the 'Power' option and choose 'Switch to Desktop'. This takes you to an old-fashioned desktop view.
Click on the folder icon in the bottom-left (a tip: the right shoulder button works as a mouse click). This will open the Dolphin file explorer. Press the three line icon in the top-right of this window and choose 'Show Hidden Files' on the menu that appears.
Choose 'Home' from the Places menu on the left. In the main window, navigate through this series of folders: .steam > steam > userdata. You'll get to a folder which is a long string of numbers - this is your unique Steam ID and this folder contains all the save data related to you. Go into that folder.
Find the folder numbered '1293830'. This is the save data for Forza Horizon 4. Right-click on this (the left shoulder button works as a right click), and choose 'Move to Trash'. Trust me - this works! Don't panic!
Close all the windows on the screen. At the top-left of the screen is an icon that says 'Return To Gaming Mode'. Click on that and it'll take you back to the normal Steam Deck home screen.
Load your game. It'll ask for your Microsoft account details which might be a little picky, but as you're still not connected to the internet it should be fine.
The game starts from the beginning! Hooray!!
The important final step: Play past the tutorial, at least ten minutes or so. Once you've done, go back to the Steam Deck's usual home screen and re-enable both the wifi and the Steam Cloud game saves.
All your DLC should still be in place, along with your gamerscore and stuff. But the game should restart from the very beginning. Enjoy!
