Crossing the Rubicon: thoughts on AI over #WeblogPoMo2025

This time last year Anne Sturdivant proposed a month-long blogging challenge: blog as much as seemed feasible over the course of May 2024.

I very happily participated, using it as an opportunity to understand why I blogged in fits and starts which ultimately got me to have a proper online home and post a little more regularly.

I'm grateful to Anne for that prompt. It helped me reflect, it made me realise things about myself, and it made me happier.1

Though there is no official challenge, I want to do the same again over the course of May this year too...

...because I need to think about AI.

My gut reaction to AI, the ethics around its development and use, how it has ruined parts of the web, how its dominance seems inevitable, how it is useful, how it might be ok, how it might be devastating.

April has been where my views have been challenged and are starting to change. May, and #WeblogPoMo2025, is where I hope to reach some conclusions.

  1. It made loads of other people happy too. It was a really lovely moment. Anne's taking a break from the web for the moment, and I wish her the very best.
